CA State Seal Etched Glass Courtroom Edgelighting by ImaginedGlass
CA State Seal Etched Glass Courtroom Edgelighting
These are pictures the Santa Ana, CA courthouse sent me, including the original image before it was sent out.  It was installed using 1" aluminum standoffs and then LED lights added around the edge of the etched glass to illuminate this feature.

It's always nice to hear these words (which were sent with the pics) from them or from anyone that I've made a glass work for:  "Thank you for the amazing work, we are so happy."

Shown is the full image of the Great Seal of the State of California sandblasted on a 40" piece of Starphire (low iron clear) glass with polished edge.  The etching has been done in reverse from the backside of the glass.  The image depicts Minerva, the Roman Goddess, holding a shield and spear, a miner, bear, wheat sheaths, sailing ships and steam ship, background mountains, 31 stars, Eureka motto, lettering, and a knotted border.

A vinyl mask was cut and peeled layer after layer starting with the areas that have the deepest carving until it finished with a flat frosting and then shading.  A 220 grit aluminum oxide was used, which gives it a smoother, yet rough surface in the etching.

The seal was commissioned for an appellate court located in Santa Ana, CA.  It will be mounted using four standoffs to hold it away from the wall.

Lower section of the Starphire glass etching of the Great Seal of the State of California.  Showing the bear, wheat sheaths, miner, sailing ships, mountains, and the Roman Goddess, Minerva holding a spear and shield.  The glass has been deep carved, frosted, and shaded from the back side.

Reversed image of a section of the Great Seal of the State of California sandblasted.  Deep carving is done to give a bass relief sculpture in the glass.

I am open to do custom artwork (commissions). Please contact me here or email me if you're interested in a specialized work of decorative art glass -

You may also purchase items for sale at or contact me about anything you've seen or an idea you would like to have made.

Please "like" me on my Imagined Glass FB Page. There's a few vids, including one that has the Gear Mechanism paperweight. Gives a little better idea of it's depth.

I also work for a stained glass company, Radiant Arts, Inc., which we do windows all over the country (even outside of the USA - especially if you want to flip the bill for our flight and accommodations :)).

In my gallery are some examples of the designs I've done personally from the artwork, painting and firing the glass, to fabrication.

First, I want to thank the wonderful Deviant, SaloGuardione who had suggested my Butterfly Fairy Glass… for a DD.  With her suggestion I was accepted into DeviantArt's DD (Thank you to them also for choosing it) and have had many requests to share and was also featured by Talty, another kind Deviant here

From all this so many of you have come by to view, +watch, comment, and share my glass art.  I would like to thank each of you individually, and I had started to as much as I could, but I'm sorry I can't get through the overwhelming amount of response.  I hope though that everyone will know and see this and understand I do really appreciate your kind words and support.  You are all absolutely still welcome to contact me, ask questions, or quietly lean back and smile, wink or nod.

This community has earned a well deserved  and a special Thank You!

Sincerest gratitude,

Brian Laughlin

~and, to anyone that is interested in more than admiring my work from afar (or rather closer than their monitor allows) and for those that have asked wanting to have something for their own, I do have glass work that is available or can be made for you.  You can find some items for sale at or contact me directly here or there or at for any decorative art glass projects you have in mind.
